Something to celebrate! Commencing October 2018, the first round of offers will be released for WA State Sponsorship for University Graduates. The list of available occupations is extensive and designed to boost international student numbers in Western Australia. For past and current students, this is a very welcome development. WA State Sponsorship for University Graduates is available to:
- eligible university graduates who have gained a higher qualification
- studied for at least 2 years in Western Australia at a Western Australian university;
- have an available occupation on the Graduate occupation list
- valid work experience
- a 12 month job offer
- English language skills
Western Australia offers State nomination for the permanent Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the temporary Skilled Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 489) which allows migrants to live in regional Western Australia.
To obtain WA State Sponsorship for University Graduates, you must meet all the following criteria.
- Score at least 65 in the Department of Home Affairs points test.
- Valid skills assessment
- Occupation on Graduate occupation list (GOL)
Your nominated occupation must be listed as available for the intended visa subclass on the Graduate occupation list and be eligible for your intended qualification type; being either:
• PhD and Masters graduates; or
• Bachelor and higher degree graduates.
- Western Australian study
To obtain WA State Sponsorship for University Graduates, you will be required to show proof of at least two academic years of full time study in Western Australia at a Western Australian university. You will need to provide your award certificate, along with transcripts clearly showing two years full time study in Western Australia. This will be requested as part of your State nomination application.
- English Language Skills
Have demonstrated at least the minimum English language requirements applicable to your occupation. If you have a passport from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States of America or Ireland, you are not required to sit an English exam to be eligible for Western Australian State nomination.

English Language Test Results for Graduate Stream

- Under 45 years of age
- Demonstrated the minimum required work experience in nominated occupation (not required for Phd Graduates and Masters Graduates)
at least one year of Australian work experience in the nominated (or closely related) occupation** over the last 10 years; or
at least three years of overseas work experience in the nominated (or closely related) occupation over the last 10 years.
Work experience must be gained post-qualification and via paid employment. You must have worked at least 20 hours per week in the specified occupation.WA Migration Services does not conduct work experience assessments and defers to the relevant assessing authority as to the suitability of work experience for points.
- Provide a contract of Employment
All applicants must have a contract of employment for full time employment for at least 12 months in Western Australia in the nominated (or closely related) occupation. If you are intending to apply for a Subclass 489 visa, the contract must be for employment located in a regional area of Western Australia. Full time employment is defined as “on average at least 35 hours of work per week.You may provide two employment contracts which equal at least 35 hours of work per week.
- A $200 non-refundable application fee applies.
If your application is successful, WA Migration Services nominates you in SkillSelect and you automatically receive an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs to lodge your visa application.
Selection process for WA State Sponsorship for University Graduates
On a monthly basis a set number of EOIs are selected from SkillSelect to receive an invitation to apply for State nomination. WA Migration Services will contact you via email with a link to the State nomination application form if you are invited. EOIs are selected based on the following ranking system.
Applicants eligible for the graduate stream by;
a if you have completed a PhD or Masters qualification in Western Australia at
a Western Australian university, that includes 2 years of full time study:
b if you have completed a Honours degree or other higher degree in Western
Australia at a Western Australian university, that includes 2 years full time
study:
c if you have completed a Bachelor degree in Western Australia at a Western Australian university, that includes 2 years full time study:
d the highest amount of Australian work experience in their nominated or closely related occupation:
e the highest level of English language proficiency; and
f the highest total SkillSelect points score.
If multiple EOIs are ranked at the same level, invitations will be issued based on the EOI submission date.
Invitation rounds are anticipated to run on the second Thursday of each month.
