Changes to Health Criteria for Children Born in Australia

Starting from 16 October 2024, changes to the Public Interest Criteria (PIC) 4005 and 4007 will provide relief for minor visa applicants who were born and ordinarily reside in Australia. These applicants will no longer be required to demonstrate that they are free from any medical condition that may impose a significant cost on the Australian healthcare system or impact access to services for Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Who is affected?

This amendment applies to children born in Australia who are applying for a visa. Previously, they may have faced visa refusal if their condition required costly healthcare or community services. This new provision removes that barrier, ensuring that children who meet the criteria can proceed with their visa applications without the need to meet these stringent health requirements.

If your child is born in Australia during the visa application process, that child  will no longer be required to pass a medical.
